Boston Dynamics’ robotic quadruped, Spot, known for its work in factory inspections and exploring ancient sites like Pompeii, is now being tested for a new role in package delivery. The company is experimenting with a conveyor belt accessory that enables Spot to transport packages from a vehicle and autonomously deliver them to customers’ doorsteps, aiming to ease the workload of delivery personnel.
While previous attempts at automating deliveries have been made using wheeled robots and drones, human intervention remains crucial for navigating complex environments such as stairs and cluttered pathways efficiently. Spot’s versatility in maneuvering challenging terrains and obstacles could make it an ideal delivery assistant, particularly in suburban settings where pathways can be unpredictable.
Boston Dynamics is actively discussing with major logistics companies to pilot Spot for last-mile delivery services. By showcasing how Spot can assist in parcel distribution, the company hopes to demonstrate the robot’s effectiveness in justifying its price tag of around $75,000. Spot’s agility in handling diverse environments could potentially enhance delivery operations by reducing physical strain on drivers and increasing delivery capacity.
Moreover, leveraging Spot for deliveries could enable drivers to optimize their time by preparing for the next delivery while the robot completes its current drop-off, potentially boosting overall efficiency. Paige Miller, Boston Dynamics’ senior staff product manager for Spot, envisions that for every three packages delivered using Spot, an additional package could be accommodated in the delivery van, illustrating the potential productivity gains offered by the robotic assistant.
