The Trillion-Dollar Wager on Humanoid Robots by Tesla

Tesla is branching out beyond being just an automaker with its next ambitious project known as Optimus, a humanoid robot designed to work in a world built for humans with arms, hands, and legs. The company is setting up the initial production lines in Fremont, capable of producing up to a million robots per year, with plans to launch a second line in Texas by 2027 that could produce up to ten million units. Elon Musk believes that Optimus could account for about 80% of Tesla’s future value. According to investment firm ARK Invest, the potential market for household robots could significantly boost economic output, projecting an increase of $62,000 per year per household, amounting to nearly six trillion dollars across all 90 million owner-occupied homes in the US.

ARK Invest anticipates human-level performance in everyday tasks by 2028, although this remains a vision for the future. Tesla has only announced the production start for later this year, with the third generation of Optimus yet to be revealed. Musk has described Optimus as Tesla’s most challenging product to scale, forecasting a gradual ramp-up in production. Despite competition from companies like Figure AI and Unitree, Tesla aims to leverage its software and manufacturing edge in the robot market.

From a financial perspective, Tesla’s stock chart indicates a recent price increase that closed a gap from July. Technical support levels are seen at $396 (200-day moving average), $349 (50-day moving average), and early September lows. A drop below $349 could question the recovery trend since July. Upcoming factors such as delivery numbers and quarterly reports in October will be closely watched.

For investors interested in Musk’s AI ventures, opportunities extend beyond Tesla. Following the acquisition of xAI in February, SpaceX now includes the language model Grok, positioning both companies as a duo in the realm of physical AI. Morgan Stanley views SpaceX and Tesla as a combination of computational power and connectivity from SpaceX and robotics and data from Tesla. The investment magazine DER AKTIONÄR continues to favor SpaceX, with a positive outlook in their investment portfolio.

Lastly, SpaceX’s involvement in the DER AKTIONÄR Global Space Champions Index underscores its significance in the global space economy, showcasing a compilation of 20 top companies in the space industry, covering activities from rocket launches and satellite communications to earth observation, space data, aerospace, and defense.
