In the vast warehouses of the American logistics giant GXO, a sleek blue-green figure is bustling back and forth. Resembling a bird with slender legs and nimble claws, the machine employee named “Digit” seamlessly assists in moving logistics plastic boxes onto the conveyor belt alongside human workers. Digit, the first commercially deployed humanoid robot in the world, has faithfully carried out its tasks for over a year now.
Recently, Agility Robotics, the American robot unicorn, celebrated the first anniversary of Digit’s work at GXO. Having clocked over 2,000 work hours and handled more than 300,000 inventory units, Digit has marked a significant milestone in the robotics industry.
According to Jonathan Hurst, co-founder and Chief Robotics Officer of Agility Robotics, Digit has immense potential for further development. The vision is for Digit to transition from warehouses to factories, retail spaces, healthcare sectors, and eventually into households. While the journey towards consumer homes may take time, addressing each market incrementally could lead to the creation of billion-dollar companies along the way.
Agility Robotics, known for its Robots-as-a-Service agreement with GXO and other collaborations, is positioning itself as a leader in safety solutions for humanoid robots. Ensuring safety in scaling commercial applications is paramount, as highlighted by Hurst, who emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive safety strategy for deploying robots effectively.
The road to full cooperation between humans and robots involves integrating advanced sensors and safety features in robots like Digit to work seamlessly in shared spaces. Agility Robotics aims to unveil its fifth generation Digit by 2026, designed to operate safely alongside humans in various environments.
Navigating from structured environments like warehouses to more dynamic and diverse settings, the initial applications for humanoid robots signify a fundamental shift towards flexible and open-world scenarios. By focusing on ideal markets like warehouse logistics, Agility Robotics continues to refine Digit’s functionalities and safety features while fostering mutual growth with customers.
Looking ahead, Agility Robotics envisions a progressive integration of humanoid robots in industrial environments, setting the stage for broader applications in retail, construction, caregiving, and eventually in everyday households. The journey towards a future where humans and robots coexist harmoniously will require ongoing innovation and collaboration between both parties.
