SoftBank is venturing into the realm of Physical AI, as stated by CEO Masayoshi Son. Teaming up with ABB Robotics, the companies plan to merge cutting-edge technology and expertise with a common goal of integrating Artificial Super Intelligence and robotics. This innovative collaboration aims to drive a revolutionary transformation that will advance humanity.
The partnership includes a significant decision by ABB to halt its intention to separate its robotics division into an independent publicly traded entity. The transaction is anticipated to finalize in the middle to the end of 2026, yielding approximately $5.3 billion from the divestment, as outlined in a statement by ABB. Additionally, associated separation expenses are estimated at around $200 million, with half of this figure already factored into the 2025 financial forecast.
Son has been keen on bolstering the group’s AI initiatives through investments and acquisitions in various technology sectors. SoftBank’s notable assets include chip designer Arm and a substantial ownership stake in ChatGPT proprietor OpenAI. The company also recently announced a collaboration with Intel Corp to establish a $70 million AI memory project in Japan, focusing on addressing energy challenges in the data center industry.
SoftBank’s involvement in the field of robotics is not new; a venture that started in 2012 culminated in the acquisition of a majority share in the French company Aldebaran, leading to the launch of the humanoid robot Pepper in 2014. Despite initial setbacks, robotics has since become a pivotal area of interest for the company, with investments made in firms such as AutoStore Holdings and Agile Robots.
In a recent update, SoftBank Group revealed its decision to acquire the robotics division of Swiss engineering firm ABB in a significant $5.4 billion deal. This move underscores the Japanese corporation’s strategy to enhance its artificial intelligence portfolio. Noteworthy collaborations and investments in AI projects, like the $500 billion Stargate initiative announced in September with OpenAI and Oracle Corp, further highlight SoftBank’s commitment to driving the future of AI technology.
