HD Hyundai, a South Korean company, announced its intention on Monday to conduct trials of welding humanoid robots at shipyards belonging to its subsidiaries, including the renowned shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The company highlighted that its affiliated firms recently entered into a partnership with Persona AI, a prominent U.S.-based artificial intelligence company specializing in industrial humanoid robots. As part of the collaboration, HD Hyundai will use its shipyard data to develop robot training technologies for real-world testing.
Persona AI will concentrate on crafting a bipedal humanoid platform engineered to move efficiently within the intricate environments of shipyards, as explained by HD Hyundai. The conglomerate based in Seoul revealed that the initiative’s objective is to evaluate robots capable of executing advanced tasks like welding, mirroring the skills and operational methods of highly competent personnel. HD Hyundai emphasized that these specialized humanoids tailored for shipyards will set the stage for future smart facilities, enhancing worker safety and bolstering production efficiency.
In a statement, HD Hyundai expressed its ambition to pioneer a new era in the shipbuilding sector by integrating humanoids into ship construction sites. Although the group did not specify a timeline for implementing the robots in practical operations, it is anticipated that this move will encounter resistance from labor unions. The stock price of HD Hyundai experienced a 9.23% decline on Monday on the Seoul stock exchange, while the country’s main index, KOSPI, dropped by 6.49% amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
