Hyundai’s subsidiary, HD Hyundai in South Korea, announced plans to introduce humanoid robots for welding tests at shipyards managed by its affiliates, including renowned shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The conglomerate revealed that its subsidiaries recently partnered with Persona AI, a prominent U.S.-based artificial intelligence firm specializing in industrial humanoid robots. This collaboration aims to utilize the shipyard data of HD Hyundai to develop robot training technologies for practical field evaluations.
Persona AI will concentrate on creating a bipedal humanoid platform tailored for navigating complex shipyard conditions efficiently, as per HD Hyundai’s information. The project’s objective is to assess robots’ capability in executing advanced tasks like welding by mimicking the skills and work patterns of highly trained personnel. HD Hyundai emphasized that these specialized humanoids for shipyards are envisioned as a fundamental element for future smart facilities, promoting worker safety and enhancing production efficiency in shipbuilding activities.
Stating their intention to revolutionize the shipbuilding industry by integrating humanoids into construction sites, HD Hyundai did not specify a timeline for deploying these robots in operational settings. However, the conglomerate anticipates resistance from labor unions towards this initiative. Following this announcement, HD Hyundai’s stock price experienced a 9.23% decrease on the Seoul stock exchange, aligning with the broader market trend as the KOSPI index dropped by 6.49% amid escalating geopolitical tensions between Washington and Tehran.
