Unitree Forecasts Distant “GPT Moment” for Robotics Industry

Unitree Robotics, a leading Chinese humanoid maker, anticipates that the robotics industry may not experience a groundbreaking moment similar to ChatGPT’s advancement in generative artificial intelligence for another two to five years, according to Irving Chen, the company’s director for the Asia Pacific and other regions. Speaking at Nikkei’s Global Digital Summit 2026 in Tokyo on July 22, Chen emphasized that while large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in the realm of software, their integration with robots and physical machinery remains a challenge. He highlighted that while LLMs excel in the virtual world, they struggle to exhibit the same level of proficiency when it comes to controlling hardware in diverse real-world environments that demand processing of numerous variables.

Chen’s remarks shed light on the hurdles facing the growing humanoid robotics sector, where robots are foreseen to introduce autonomous physical artificial intelligence into factories, yet are currently mainly utilized for entertainment and demonstrations featuring preprogrammed movements. Unitree Robotics, based in Hangzhou, has gained prominence for its viral synchronized dances and martial arts spectacles in China, showcasing the reliability and scalability of its hardware. However, Chen noted that these demonstrations do not yet reflect the level of intelligence necessary for practical tasks, with the majority of the company’s revenue coming from research and education rather than industrial applications.

Looking ahead, Chen outlined that the broader adoption of robots hinges on their ability to undertake longer and more intricate tasks reliably in varying environments without prior programming. He projected that proof-of-concept trials will dominate the field until commercial deployment gains pace by 2030, facilitating robots to assist humans in a wider range of labor-intensive tasks. Chen identified the development of more advanced robot “brains” and large-scale manufacturing as essential for the industry’s future progress. Enhanced software models that can interpret surroundings and translate instructions into physical actions, coupled with faster computing response times, are deemed crucial. Additionally, manufacturers are urged to produce durable machines at a reduced cost and in increased volumes.

Unitree, which intends to launch an IPO in Shanghai after obtaining regulatory approval, aims to raise funds amounting to RMB 4.2 billion (USD 619.7 million), with a considerable portion earmarked for AI and embodied intelligence research. The company also plans to invest substantially in newer hardware development and establish new factories with the capacity to manufacture approximately 20,000 robots annually. Chen mentioned that Unitree plans to introduce more versatile robotics models designed for deployment across residential, commercial, and industrial settings without the need for preset configurations.

In conclusion, while the robotics industry prepares for a transformative future, challenges persist in integrating artificial intelligence effectively into physical systems. Unitree’s strategic investments and innovative approach showcase its commitment to advancing humanoid robotics and shaping the industry towards increased functionality and efficiency.
