A group of approximately 30 robots in Poland recently made headlines by staging a protest to advocate for human rights in the context of artificial intelligence (AI). The protest, organized by a group called Democratism, took place in front of Poland’s Digital Affairs Ministry in Warsaw. The robots, which included humanoid figures and robot dogs, gathered to express concerns about the regulation of AI and the increasing threat that automation poses to human employment.
The demonstration aimed to spark a broader conversation about the impact of AI and robotics on the labor market. The protest featured robots marching in circles, displaying flags, and broadcasting messages through loudspeakers. Videos of the event circulated online, showing the robots carrying signs with slogans such as “Defend workplaces,” “Time for rules,” and “Don’t wait, regulate.”
Grzegorz Kulis, one of the human organizers, emphasized the need for regulations to protect workers from being replaced by humanoid robots and AI in cognitive tasks. The presence of robots at the protest was intended to draw attention to the issue and highlight the urgency of addressing the rapid advancements in AI and robotics.
The protest coincided with Poland’s efforts to implement new regulations for AI, aligning with the European Union’s initiatives to govern the technology. The EU AI Act, which came into effect in 2024, follows a risk-based approach and imposes stringent requirements on AI systems that pose potential risks. Poland has adopted its own legislation to implement the EU rules, including the establishment of a Commission for the Development and Safety of Artificial Intelligence.
President Karol Nawrocki signed the AI systems law in Poland, which provides a framework for overseeing AI applications and managing complaints related to potentially harmful AI systems. These developments reflect a growing awareness of the need to address the ethical and regulatory challenges posed by AI and automation.
As the debate around AI and automation continues to evolve globally, the protest in Poland serves as a reminder of the importance of establishing rules and protections to safeguard human rights in the age of artificial intelligence.
