Led by Mingyang Xu from Keio University in Japan, in collaboration with institutions such as the MIT Media Lab, the team recently unveiled a demo video illustrating the capabilities of a lighter-than-air robot equipped with fins. Resembling a white floating whale, this robot hovers with a serene silence, in stark contrast to the typical noise associated with drones. Its lightweight construction, soft exterior, and absence of sharp edges make it safe for human interaction, posing minimal risk of injury.

The field of robotics often grapples with the challenge of creating machines that not only ensure safety during interaction but also evoke emotional engagement. Traditional designs with rigid structures and artificial appearances can trigger a sense of unease known as the uncanny valley, where human-like features fall short of being convincingly realistic. Soft floating robots present a promising solution, offering a more emotionally resonant and secure mode of human-robot interaction. By focusing on gentle, full-body movements rather than human-like facial expressions, these robots bypass the discomfort associated with the uncanny valley.
