Hyundai Motor Group is set to increase its ownership in Boston Dynamics Inc. by acquiring the remaining stake held by SoftBank Group. Initially acquiring an 80 percent stake in the U.S.-based robotics company from SoftBank in 2021 for 1 trillion won, Hyundai’s ownership has now reached 90.35 percent, with SoftBank retaining 9.65 percent. The exact purchase price for the increased stake was not disclosed, but the move aligns with Hyundai’s long-term robotics strategy. The group aims to strengthen collaboration with Boston Dynamics in developing AI-powered robotics technologies and related ecosystems.
Hyundai Motor Group envisions building an end-to-end AI robotics value chain by leveraging Boston Dynamics’ AI robotics expertise along with its manufacturing capabilities, mobility technologies, and global value chain. This integrated approach will accelerate the development, validation, and commercialization of physical AI technologies and robotics solutions. In particular, the group plans to introduce Atlas, Boston Dynamics’ humanoid robot, at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America starting in 2028, initially to support parts sequencing and later expanding to component assembly by 2030.
The acquisition of SoftBank’s stake is expected to enhance the group’s position in the robotics industry, allowing for innovative advancements in AI technology and robotics solutions. Hyundai Motor Group’s further investment signifies its commitment to solidify its presence in the evolving field of robotics and artificial intelligence.
