Google has entered into a partnership agreement with the German company Agile Robots, signaling its commitment to robotics as a key tool in the development of artificial intelligence. Agile Robots specializes in the development of intelligent robotic manipulators and sensor-equipped humanoid robots. As part of this collaboration, Google will integrate its AI models, known as Google Gemini Robotics, into Agile Robots’ equipment.
The partnership is based on the belief that applying AI in the physical world should be transformative. By combining Agile Robots’ equipment and other robotics solutions developed in Germany with Google’s DeepMind Gemini Robotics core models, both parties aim to succeed in deploying robots, collecting data, training models, and iteratively improving their capabilities.
For Google, robotics stands as one of the essential scenarios for the application of AI, positioning it in competition with industry giants like Amazon and Tesla. Agile Robots, headquartered in Munich, has deployed over 20,000 robotic systems worldwide to date, with plans to extensively integrate Google’s solutions into their existing systems. Initially, the focus will be on “high-value industrial” scenarios, including manufacturing, where the company will assist Google in developing more advanced AI models for next-generation robots.
Last year, Google introduced fundamental and reasoning AI models under Gemini Robotics and announced a collaboration with Texas-based Apptronik. This year, it was revealed that Google DeepMind would collaborate with Boston Dynamics on the Atlas robot project. Additionally, Google’s subsidiary, Intrinsic, acquired from Alphabet, is set to play a significant role in the evolution of “Android for robotics”. Notably, Aaron Saunders, a former technical director at Boston Dynamics, joined DeepMind.
While Google’s advancements in robotics have been notable, some employees have expressed concerns about the collaboration with Boston Dynamics due to the company’s existing contracts with the US Department of Defense. Despite this, Google continues to forge strategic partnerships in the field of robotics to advance its AI capabilities and contribute to shaping the future of automation and artificial intelligence technologies.
