Xiaomi has recently introduced a humanoid robot into its electric vehicle manufacturing facility, as per a report by AzerNEWS. This innovative robot autonomously operated for three hours at the self-tapping nut installation station in the foundry. During its testing phase, the robot displayed an impressive 90.2% success rate in its operations, completing tasks with an average production cycle of 76 seconds. The specific tasks it undertook included precise gripping of fasteners, accurate positioning, and automated tightening following the integration of casting components.
Powered by Xiaomi’s own VLA model, Robotics-0, which comes with 4.7 billion parameters and reinforcement learning enhancements, the system’s control architecture seamlessly combines visual perception, tactile feedback, and joint position control. This integration enables the robot to maintain stability and adjust to minor deviations on the assembly line. Xiaomi sees this development as an initial move towards implementing humanoid robots on a large scale in automotive manufacturing. The company’s future plans involve expanding the robot’s roles to cover additional assembly tasks including quality checks and component handling.
This advancement not only enhances efficiency but also has the potential to address labor shortages and improve workplace safety by taking on repetitive or physically demanding tasks. Xiaomi’s strategic move to incorporate humanoid robotics also strengthens its competitive edge against rivals such as Tesla and Xpeng, both of which are similarly investing in humanoid robotic technology for industrial applications.
A noteworthy aspect of Xiaomi’s initiative is the exploration of enabling the robot to collaborate in a limited capacity with human workers. This potential development could lead to the creation of hybrid assembly lines where humans and humanoid robots work side by side.
