The G1-D: Unitree’s First Wheeled Humanoid Robot with Vision, Manipulation, and Learning Capabilities

Unitree Robotics has launched its G1-D wheeled humanoid robot, a groundbreaking innovation tailored for cutting-edge data collection and model training purposes. As the focal point of a comprehensive solution, the G1-D seamlessly merges state-of-the-art humanoid hardware with a scalable software platform designed for data acquisition, AI training, and real-world implementation.

The G1-D robot is offered in two variants: Standard and Flagship, both standing within the height range of 1260 mm to 1680 mm and weighing up to 80 kg. While the Standard model remains stationary, the Flagship version boasts a mobile base capable of differential drive, enabling speeds of up to 1.5 meters per second. Equipped with advanced sensors like LiDAR, depth cameras, and collision detection units, the mobile base facilitates enhanced functionality.

Unitree has endowed the G1-D with either 17 or 19 degrees of freedom, depending on the chosen model, excluding the end effectors. Each arm features seven degrees of freedom and supports a payload of up to 3 kg. The robot’s versatile waist joint permits motion along the Z-axis within ±155 degrees and along the Y-axis between -2.5 and +135 degrees, with a vertical working range spanning from 0 to 2 meters.

Additionally, the G1-D is outfitted with a high-definition binocular camera on its head and an additional HD camera on each wrist. It supports various end effectors, including a two-finger gripper, three-finger dexterous hands with or without tactile sensors, and a five-finger dexterous hand. The robot is powered by an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX module, delivering up to 100 TOPS of AI performance. The Flagship model offers a commendable battery life of up to six hours.

Designed with versatility in mind, the G1-D is adept at fulfilling diverse real-world tasks, from automating repetitive manual processes in industrial and service settings to aiding in warehouse automation and data annotation for AI training. Its onboard vision and mobility allow seamless interaction in retail or consumer environments. With dexterous hands and a mobile base, the robot can manipulate objects, conduct inspections, and serve as a proficient data-gathering agent in intricate scenarios.

To complement the hardware, Unitree has introduced a robust software stack managing the entire AI workflow, encompassing data acquisition tools, task management, annotation systems, and real-time tracking. The platform supports distributed training, integrates with prominent open-source frameworks, and provides a simulation environment for model evaluation. It also facilitates the smooth export and deployment of trained models.

In other technology news, Alibaba has recently unveiled its innovative AI glasses featuring swappable batteries, a POV camera, and the Qwen assistant. Moreover, a study from LSE predicts that by 2028, Gen Alpha will favor voice over keyboards in the workplace.
