CATL Implements Humanoid Robots for Quality Control in EV Battery Production

Humanoid robots have been a topic of much discussion lately, with many examples involving staged demos rather than actual factory work. However, CATL, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery maker, has now introduced humanoid robots onto a genuine production line. The company has successfully implemented its Moz humanoid robot at a battery pack factory, marking a significant milestone as the first power battery production line to use humanoid robots with “embodied intelligence” on a large scale.

Developed by Spirit AI, a CATL subsidiary specializing in robotics and automation, Moz is not just limited to simple pick-and-place tasks. Instead, it is strategically placed at critical quality checkpoints in the production process. Its primary responsibility is attaching battery connectors, a task that requires precision, consistency, and careful control of applied force. CATL reports that Moz has achieved performance levels comparable to skilled human workers, boasting a remarkable 99% success rate in connector insertion. This high level of reliability is made possible through an advanced vision system that enables the robot to adapt in real-time. Moz can adjust its posture and movements on the spot to account for minor misalignments in materials or connection points. Additionally, it monitors the force it applies, ensuring that wiring harnesses are securely fastened without causing damage to delicate components.

In contrast to the challenges faced by other humanoid robots in factory settings, such as overheating joints and mechanical failures, Moz’s deployment highlights a breakthrough in integrating humanoid robots effectively into industrial operations. While some humanoid robots have gained attention through public demonstrations, their ability to function continuously in rigorous industrial environments remains unproven. The advancement comes at an opportune time as China’s humanoid robotics sector is rapidly growing, raising concerns about potential overcapacity similar to what the country has experienced in EV manufacturing.

CATL’s successful deployment of humanoid robots signifies a shift towards practical applications and revenue-generating roles for these robots on the factory floor. This development underscores the evolution of humanoid robots beyond experimental phases, showcasing their potential in enhancing efficiency and productivity in industrial operations.
