On the forefront of technological progress, humanoid robots have been recognized as lagging behind AI by a significant margin in terms of learning from data. Recently, Greece hosted the world’s inaugural International Humanoid Olympiad in Olympia, featuring humanoid robots engaging in sporting events like boxing and soccer matches. Despite their ability to mimic human actions, humanoid robots have yet to prove themselves in daily tasks such as household chores. While AI applications like ChatGPT have rapidly advanced, humanoid robots are still working to catch up in terms of learning capabilities.

Minas Liarokapis, an academic and startup founder behind the Humanoid Olympiad, foresees a future where humanoids will assist in household chores, although this development is anticipated to take substantial time. To reduce the learning gap between humanoids and AI, experts propose new approaches, such as robots collecting data during practical activities. Researchers are exploring reinforcement learning techniques to enable humanoid robots to swiftly learn from real-time data. The event featured industry leaders like Hon Weng Chong, CEO of Cortical Labs, who presented groundbreaking research on developing biological computer brains for robots.

The Olympiad centered on realistic challenges to gauge the progress of humanoid robots accurately. While some traditional events were ruled out due to complexities, competitions were tailored to showcase practical tasks achievable by humanoid robots. It is clear that humanoid robots must accelerate their learning capabilities to keep pace with AI tools and software. Bridging this gap will determine whether humanoids remain specialized performers or evolve into everyday companions alongside advanced AI. The continuous evolution of technology offers promising ways for robots to enhance human life on both societal and individual levels.
