China Standardizes Humanoid Robotics Industry

China has introduced a comprehensive framework to regulate and systematize the fast-growing humanoid robotics industry in response to the increasing technical diversity within the sector. The unveiling of the 2026 edition of the humanoid robots and embodied intelligence standard system took place at the annual meeting of the humanoid robots and embodied intelligence standardization technical committee in Beijing’s E-Town. Noted as the first national-level design, this framework spans the entire industry chain and life-cycle of humanoid robotics and embodied intelligence.

Amidst a significant rise in the number of humanoid robot manufacturers and product models in China highlighted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 2026 is considered a pivotal year for mass production in the industry. Public interest in humanoid robots has surged, as evidenced by a notable increase in sales reported by JD, a major e-commerce platform, following high-profile Spring Festival performances featuring humanoid robots.

However, challenges in scaling the industry persist. Manufacturing consistency emerged as a key issue during discussions among industry executives. Long and intricate supply chains, ranging from supply networks to components and operating systems, pose hurdles in ensuring uniformity in the production of humanoid robots.

Hardware standardization also remains uneven, with crucial components such as high-torque joints and dexterous hands yet to achieve economies of scale, thereby keeping costs high and impeding expansion. Furthermore, the lack of high-quality embodied data and uniform standards hampers progress in the sector.

The newly established framework addresses these challenges through a structured approach encompassing foundational standards, brain-inspired computing, body structures, complete systems, applications, safety, and ethics. Collaboration between government agencies, research institutions, businesses, and universities has culminated in this initiative aimed at enhancing industry-wide standards.

A committee vice-chair and founder of Unitree Robotics, Wang Xingxing, emphasized the importance of unified task definitions, evaluation systems, and safety standards as immediate priorities for the industry’s advancement. Despite the absence of globally dominant humanoid robotics standards, China’s progress in embodied intelligence has garnered international recognition, positioning the country to influence future international standards.

In conclusion, China’s recent efforts in standardizing the humanoid robotics industry reflect a significant step towards streamlining operations, promoting innovation, and establishing a leading role in shaping the global robotics landscape.
