Mobileye Acquires Robotics Startup Mentee for $900 Million

Mobileye Global announced its acquisition of humanoid robotics startup Mentee Robotics for approximately $900 million, reflecting their belief in the future of artificial intelligence. The Israeli self-driving technology company saw a 12% increase in their stock value following the news. This move underscores the convergence of autonomous driving and robotics, as both fields rely on similar technologies for sensing, perception, and decision-making, paving the way for embodied AI.

The growing interest in humanoid robotics stems from the notion that human-like robots can better function in various environments such as warehouses and factories, addressing labor shortages and enhancing productivity. Intel divested its computer vision business RealSense last year to accelerate its entry into the robotics sector. Furthermore, Intel remains the principal shareholder in Mobileye, holding a 23% stake in the company.

The CEO of Mobileye, Amnon Shashua, who co-founded Mentee Robotics and serves as its co-CEO, has spearheaded this acquisition. Mentee Robotics, which secured $21 million in funding earlier this year and is valued at around $162 million, has investments from companies like Cisco and Samsung’s venture capital arms. Various companies, including Tesla, Figure AI, Agility Robotics, and Chinese startups, are actively engaged in developing bipedal robots capable of executing a wide array of tasks.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, envisions humanoid robots as a significant part of the company’s future business landscape. The recent deal announced at the CES technology show in Las Vegas combines Mobileye’s expertise in software, sensing, and safety systems for self-driving vehicles with Mentee’s focus on creating versatile humanoid robots. Mentee Robotics differentiates itself by utilizing a method that eliminates the need for extensive real-world data collection to train the robot, instead, converting a single human demonstration into millions of virtual repetitions.

Initial pilot programs with customers are expected to commence in 2026, with full-scale production and commercialization set for 2028. The transaction is anticipated to be finalized in the first quarter of 2026, pending customary closing conditions. This strategic move positions Mobileye and Mentee Robotics at the forefront of innovation in artificial intelligence and robotics.
