In the ever-evolving world of robotics, the dream of having helpful humanoid robots coexist among us is no longer reserved for science fiction. From the futuristic visions of animated sitcoms like The Jetsons to real-life advancements in technology, the journey of robots has been one of steady progression. In the past, robots were mostly experimental, confined to academic and scientific domains. However, recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) have paved the way for robots to step into various sectors, including manufacturing, services, retail, and even households.
Companies like Boston Dynamics, Tesla, and Softbank Robotics are at the forefront of ushering humanoid robots into commercial reality. In Bengaluru, a startup named ‘Cosine Robots’ is making waves by designing affordable humanoid robots. Led by co-founder Kiran Mathew Koshy, a former Amazon and Google engineer, the company aims to democratize robotics by offering humanoid robots at a fraction of the current market price. While most humanoid robots today cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000, Cosine Robots is eyeing a price point of $4,000, making them more accessible to Indian industries and homes.
The startup is following a methodical approach, beginning with developing actuators, which are crucial for enabling robot movement. By focusing on building cost-effective actuators, Cosine Robots aims to reduce overall production costs and, subsequently, make their robots more affordable. The initiative plans to leverage manufacturing techniques from industries like automobile manufacturing to streamline production and lower costs.
Unlike aiming for the most advanced robots, Cosine Robots prioritizes creating robots that are practical and accessible to a wide range of consumers. Kiran Koshy envisions a future where affordable robots can revolutionize various aspects of society, from providing assistance in households to enhancing infrastructure development.
Acknowledging concerns about job displacement due to increased automation, Koshy emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that combines elements of capitalism and socialism. He believes that governments can play a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth transition to a society where robots and AI technologies coexist harmoniously with human workers.
With a focus on affordability, practicality, and societal impact, Cosine Robots is poised to lead the charge in democratizing robotics and shaping a future where robots are not just a luxury but a common household tool that benefits everyone.
