Advanced humanoid robot developer Figure AI attracts high-profile backers, secures $675M in funding

A recently funded startup, Figure AI, is dedicated to creating humanoid robots capable of handling hazardous and undesirable tasks. The company has attracted significant support from prominent figures in the field of artificial intelligence, including Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, and Microsoft, raising $675 million at a valuation of $2.6 billion. Established in 2022, Figure AI has introduced a versatile robot named Figure 01, designed to resemble and move like a human. The company envisions employing these robots in industries experiencing severe labor shortages such as manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and retail, although they are not intended for military purposes.

In a recent demonstration video, Figure 01 showcased its abilities by walking on two legs, picking up a plastic crate with its five-fingered hands, and placing it onto a conveyor belt, tethered for now. Figure AI’s long-term goal is for Figure 01 to autonomously handle everyday tasks, requiring further advancements in their AI systems. Despite facing competition in the field of humanoid robotics, with companies like Agility Robotics, Tesla, and Boston Dynamics also making strides, Figure AI has secured its position with substantial funding and strategic partnerships.

The humanoid robot market is still in its early stages, poised for significant growth according to analysts. Estimates suggest the market could reach $38 billion by 2035, with over 250,000 units projected to be shipped in 2030. Industry experts emphasize the need for significant advancements before widespread adoption can occur. To enhance their technology, Figure AI has partnered with OpenAI to develop advanced AI models and will leverage Microsoft’s Azure cloud services for infrastructure and training.

Building humanoid robots remains a costly endeavor due to the high expenses associated with components like actuators, motors, and sensors. However, costs are anticipated to decrease over time as technology advances. Notable investors in Figure AI include Intel’s venture fund, Ark Invest, Align Ventures, and Parkway Venture Capital. The company’s collaboration with key players in the industry underscores its commitment to revolutionizing the field of robotics.
