Humanoid robots set to join society within 4-5 years

Humanoid robots are expected to become a part of our daily lives within the next four or five years, as discussed during a session on tech regulation at the World Economic Forum (WEF). The recent WEF Annual Meetings of the Global Future Councils and Cybersecurity comprised discussions on various topics, including neurotech, food liberation, and tech regulation. SandboxAQ CEO, Jack Hidary, highlighted that humanoid robots would integrate into society by 2030, marking a significant development that surpasses current technological advancements.

Hidary emphasized that the introduction of humanoid robots will be a major societal shift, posing challenges for governments, regulators, and companies. One potential benefit he mentioned is the role these robots could play in providing care to the elderly in their own homes, thus potentially reducing the need for nursing homes.

While the idea of robots assisting the elderly is promising, it also raises concerns about the potential loss of human connection. Hidary acknowledged the need to address such implications to prevent any negative impacts on society. He also praised Japan for its proactive approach towards integrating robots into its aging population over the past four decades, implementing regulations to ensure safety and efficiency.

The discussions at the WEF underline the importance of preparing for the societal implications of advancing technologies such as humanoid robots. Vanessa Evers, a University of Twente professor, highlighted the necessity of creating a digital twin of the world to achieve true robot intelligence, enabling robots to exhibit advanced capabilities beyond current models.

In terms of regulation, Hidary proposed a dynamic approach that allows for regular updates to accommodate the evolving technology landscape. He suggested periodic meetings among stakeholders to ensure that regulations remain relevant over time. By incorporating mechanisms for self-updating regulations, governments can adapt to the rapid advancements in technology.

The WEF joint session on tech regulation brought together experts from various fields to discuss the challenges and opportunities posed by emerging technologies. This collaborative effort aims to address the complex issues surrounding the integration of humanoid robots into society, emphasizing the need for proactive and adaptable regulatory frameworks to navigate this technological transformation effectively.
