Figure AI has reported a significant achievement in the realm of robotics, stating that its humanoid robots successfully completed 24 hours of nonstop autonomous package sorting without any failures. Originally planned as an eight-hour test, the California-based startup extended the operation into a multi-day marathon, wherein three humanoid robots named Bob, Frank, and Gary autonomously sorted small packages around the clock without human intervention. This groundbreaking accomplishment has drawn considerable online attention, with viewers closely monitoring the robots’ performance as they surpassed their initial target.
The company revealed that the robots, powered by the Helix-02 AI system, have already sorted over 28,000 packages during the ongoing operation, demonstrating speeds comparable to human workers. Employing onboard cameras and AI reasoning, the robots can detect barcodes, pick up packages, and place them face-down on conveyor belts. Notably, the robots operate entirely autonomously, with Figure AI emphasizing the absence of teleoperation in the process and highlighting the system’s automatic recovery mechanisms in case of unforeseen challenges.
Figure AI’s humanoid robots leverage the Helix-02 neural network, designed to integrate vision, touch sensing, proprioception, and whole-body control into a unified model. Unlike traditional industrial robots that separate movement and manipulation systems, Figure AI’s robots utilize a single AI model to manage various tasks such as walking, balancing, object handling, and coordination within dynamic environments. The company is positioned among industry leaders like Tesla and Agility Robotics, aiming to commercialize humanoid robots for applications in warehouses, factories, and logistics operations.
