As the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, delve into the world of Atlas and witness its mastery of the challenging Ghost Rabona kick. In recent years, Blender has emerged as a vital tool in various production pipelines, including animation, modeling, rigging, and VFX. Notable achievements, such as Flow’s Oscar win last year, signify Blender’s growing significance in the industry. The software has also played a role in acclaimed projects like the Chainsaw Man movie and A24’s Backrooms.

Blender’s impact goes beyond entertainment, as evidenced by its use in the School of Football, a collaboration between Boston Dynamics and Hyundai aimed at training the Atlas robot in soccer skills. Teaching a robot the intricate movements required for soccer, like balance, timing, coordination, and precise footwork, poses a significant challenge, especially with the upcoming World Cup capturing global attention.

The video showcases Atlas learning the Ghost Rabona kick, a move that involves a deceptive step over followed by a crossed-leg rabona kick. Boston Dynamics acknowledged the difficulty of this maneuver even for human players, let alone a robot. Researchers began by studying the movements of soccer players and then adjusted them to match Atlas’ physical capabilities. By employing reinforcement learning, the robot was trained to mimic human actions and improve its skills through practice at an accelerated pace, essentially condensing a year’s worth of training into just 24 hours.

For those interested in learning more about the School of Football or exploring Blender’s capabilities, Blender 5.2 LTS beta offers new features such as experimental Geometry Nodes physics for hair and cloth, a Thin Wall rendering mode, and a Paint Filter node.
