In a recent development, the American engineering and robotics company, Boston Dynamics, equipped its robot, Atlas, with hands and taught it to manipulate objects.
In a video shared by Boston Dynamics, a worker realizes he forgot his tools while standing on a scaffold. To assist, the robot picks up the requested bag, ascends the scaffold using a wooden plank as a bridge, lifts it to the worker, and gracefully descends by flipping. With Atlas’s pincers having two fingers – one stationary and one movable – the robot displays enough manual dexterity to handle planks as bridges and deliver the tool bag to its human counterpart.
Previously known for being tight-lipped about their robot development, Boston Dynamics has now released a 9-minute video explaining the preparations made to showcase Atlas’s latest demonstration. Employing a technique known as model predictive control, Boston Dynamics enables the robot to anticipate the consequences of its actions in a given scenario. Currently, Atlas serves as a research platform, with Boston Dynamics’ sole commercial robot being the four-legged Spot, priced at $74,500.
