US Government Tightens Restrictions on Foreign-made Robots and Power Inverters

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently expanded its Covered List to include advanced robots and power inverters produced outside the US. This decision, influenced by a security review by the White House, identifies these devices as potential threats to national security due to supply chain vulnerabilities and cybersecurity risks posed to critical American infrastructure. The FCC authorization, required for selling, importing, or marketing devices in the US, will no longer be granted to new models of foreign-made advanced robots and power inverters. However, companies may still receive “Conditional Approval” from the Departments of War or Homeland Security to undergo the FCC approval process.

Existing models of affected robots and inverters can continue to be used and sold, with federal government procurement remaining unaffected by these regulations. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr supports the decision, emphasizing the importance of aligning with national security efforts to safeguard the US supply chain. This move is part of the FCC’s ongoing efforts to regulate foreign-made technology, with drones and consumer routers facing similar restrictions earlier this year.

In a separate development, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT are developing a real-time warning system to detect fraudulent activities during corporate video conferences. Criminals are increasingly exploiting deepfake technology to commit identity theft and financial scams during video meetings. The warning system aims to identify suspicious behavior during meetings, preventing employees from falling victim to fraudulent instructions from AI-generated personas.

Microsoft has formally requested Apple to enable interoperable clipboard access between iOS and Windows devices through the European Union interoperability process. This request, made on March 25, highlights the limitations imposed by iOS that hinder third-party platforms from offering an experience similar to Apple’s Universal Clipboard. Apple has committed to developing a solution to address this issue.

Google is working on incorporating extension review links directly within Chrome, streamlining feedback options for managing add-ons. This feature, still in development, will allow Chrome Web Store extensions in good standing to have review options accessible from various menus within the browser.
