Agility Robotics has established a new hub in Silicon Valley, positioning itself to attract top-tier engineers to bolster its humanoid technology team. Despite the fierce competition for talent in the industry, the company is not engaging in bidding wars to secure employees. Jonathan Hurst, Agility’s co-founder and chief robot officer, emphasized that they are not interested in pursuing a strategy of offering inflated pay packages to attract talent, terming it as seeking “coin-operated employees.”
The company recently inaugurated a 60,000-square-foot research and training center in Fremont, envisaging accommodating nearly 200 current and prospective employees specializing in hardware engineering, AI, machine learning, and customer operations support. This facility will function as a “robot school” aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Agility’s humanoid robot, Digit.
The strategic placement of the Fremont site, in proximity to Silicon Valley’s wealth of technical talent and well-funded robotics companies, provides Agility with a competitive edge. Established firms such as Meta and Tesla are within close reach, along with a cluster of emerging robotics companies in Palo Alto.
In the competitive arena for AI talent, where lucrative compensation packages are not uncommon, Agility is focusing on attracting candidates who align with the company’s values and goals. Despite witnessing candidates being offered significantly higher salaries elsewhere, Hurst reiterated the importance of finding candidates who resonate with Agility’s culture and mission.
Agility takes pride in being at the forefront of commercial humanoid robot deployment in the United States, with its Digit robot engaging in real-world operations since 2024. The company has amassed over 65,000 working hours across various sectors like manufacturing, distribution, and logistics, primarily involving tasks such as bin handling and transport.
With plans to go public through a SPAC later this year, Agility looks forward to leveraging its existing success, including over $300 million in conditional multiyear orders for its upcoming Digit V5 model. The company’s commitment lies in building a sustainable and thriving enterprise, rather than merely spinning grand narratives to attract talent.
