Japan has unveiled ambitious plans to deploy 10 million AI-powered robots in 18 industries by 2040, backed by a substantial $6.1 billion public investment and a newly formed consortium named Noetra. The initiative signifies the largest national robotics mobilization Japan has ever embarked on, responding to the long-standing issue of a shrinking working-age population. Noetra, established by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) in collaboration with the innovation agency NEDO, aims to develop a cutting-edge “physical AI” foundation model.
