Xiaomi recently hosted a launch event in China after making a global announcement to introduce the Xiaomi 17T and Xiaomi 17T Pro. Priced at 2,999 yuan (~ $445) and 3,999 yuan (~ $590) respectively, the new devices boast similar specifications to their global counterparts. However, the event was not solely centered around smartphones. Xiaomi also showcased its next-generation humanoid robot, allowing it a brief moment on stage to demonstrate its capabilities. During the presentation, the robot showcased its dexterity by picking up the new Xiaomi 17T Pro, adjusting the zoom using the volume buttons, and capturing a photo, showcasing Xiaomi’s advancements in robotics technology and device control.
Xiaomi has been gradually unveiling the progress of its humanoid robot project. The company is dedicated to integrating humanoid robots into its manufacturing processes, with plans to deploy these robots in its factories at scale within the next five years. A significant milestone was achieved earlier this year when Xiaomi’s robots successfully operated for three-hour shifts at a car factory, achieving an impressive 90.2% success rate in simultaneous bilateral nut installations while meeting the factory’s 76-second cycle time requirement.
In terms of hardware improvements, Xiaomi redesigned the bionic hand used in its robots, making it 60% smaller in volume to match the size of a human worker’s hand. The new version offers 64% more degrees of freedom, a full-palm tactile sensor covering 8,200 square millimeters, a gripping cycle life exceeding 150,000 operations, and a bionic sweat gland system for heat management during prolonged use.
Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, shared on Weibo that the robotics team secured top positions in two international competitions, surpassing other competitors significantly. He emphasized Xiaomi’s commitment to developing robots that can perform practical tasks in real-world scenarios, rather than only in controlled environments.
