The Future of Embodied AI: Impact and Challenges

Vishal Talwar, a Forbes Councils Member and the Senior Vice President and Sector Head of Technology – New Age Vertical at Wipro, shared insights on the growing impact of embodied AI showcased at CES 2026. He emphasized that this year marked a significant shift as AI systems were demonstrated operating in various physical environments such as open fields, backyards, and living spaces, going beyond controlled settings.

The transition of intelligence from software interfaces to physical environments brings about crucial changes. In digital systems, errors can be rectified and have limited consequences. However, in embodied AI, where intelligence interacts with the real world, errors can lead to significant costs, especially when it comes to safety-critical decisions, such as those in autonomous vehicles.

Embodied AI requires seamless integration of perception, reasoning, movement, and computing to function effectively in unpredictable environments. Multimodal perception, simulation, robotics platforms, and edge computing are crucial components that work together to ensure reliable performance when AI systems operate outside controlled settings.

While simulation plays a key role in preparing AI models for real-world deployment, challenges like sensor noise, hardware coordination, and real-time operation complexity remain. Some industry leaders, like Tesla, are testing humanoid robots designed for real-world tasks to address these challenges. These early deployments focus on gathering data on robot behavior in various environments to improve their performance and interaction with humans.

Embodied AI initiatives should prioritize clarity of purpose over speed, initially assisting human work rather than fully replacing it. Organizations need to prepare differently for embodied AI deployments and view them as continuous learning systems. Success lies in understanding where AI systems fit within operations, how to ensure responsible deployment, and fostering collaboration between humans and machines in scenarios where errors can have significant ramifications.

In summary, as advancements in embodied AI progress through simulation environments and real-world deployments, enterprises must navigate these developments with a focus on responsible implementation and collaboration between humans and machines to leverage the full potential of AI technologies.
