Soft Robot Companion POCO Redefines Human-AI Connection

POCO is a soft robotic companion crafted by designer Mehrnaz Amouei, exploring new ways for humans to interact with artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional AI systems that focus on interpreting emotions, POCO emphasizes presence, responsiveness, and clearly defined boundaries in its relationships with users. By avoiding assumptions of authority and control, POCO creates a unique relational framework that operates alongside the user.

The project delves into the complexities surrounding dependency, interpretation, and control as AI becomes increasingly integrated into personal and emotional contexts. Through a year-long research process involving qualitative interviews and iterative prototyping, POCO introduces the concept of ‘constructive interdependence,’ emphasizing the importance of setting limitations and communicating them clearly to users.

Physically, POCO is a soft, tactile object that connects to a smartphone serving as its computational core. Interaction with POCO relies on touch, utilizing capacitive sensors to respond to gestures like holding or stroking. Through slow, rhythmic movements akin to breathing, POCO creates a tangible sense of presence without relying on mechanical articulation.

The design envisions a reciprocal interaction process where POCO responds to user input, establishing a shared rhythm between user and device. By visibly indicating states of activity and rest, POCO reinforces user awareness of operational boundaries. This approach positions AI as a participant in a relational system rather than a mere tool, fostering trust through transparency, limitation, and balanced interaction.

With its soft textile body enveloping the device and its gentle, unobtrusive movements, POCO blends seamlessly into everyday life, presenting itself more as a companion than a traditional device. By focusing on tactile interaction and physical presence, POCO offers a fresh perspective on how AI can be integrated into our lives in a more human-centered way.

In conclusion, POCO’s innovative design challenges conventional AI paradigms by prioritizing mutual understanding, clear boundaries, and transparent interactions between humans and artificial intelligence. Through its unique approach to interaction and relationship-building, POCO emerges as a promising example of how AI can become a trusted companion in our daily lives.
