Q&A: Ryan Gariepy Discusses Robotics Role in Canada’s Defense Strategy

Ryan Gariepy, a prominent figure in the Canadian robotics industry, has dedicated nearly twenty years to creating robots. Not only is he known for his technical expertise, but he is also an advocate for responsible deployment of robotics, particularly in military settings.

In 2009, Gariepy co-founded Clearpath Robotics in Kitchener-Waterloo and served as the company’s CTO until it was acquired by Rockwell Automation in 2023 for approximately $600 million USD. Presently, he holds the position of vice-president of robotics at Rockwell and chairs the Canadian Robotics Council, with a focus on advancing Canada’s robotics sector.

In a recent interview with BetaKit, Gariepy shared his insights on various aspects of robotics in Canada, including the potential for increased utilization of robots in different industries. He believes Canada has the resources and expertise to become a global leader in robotics due to its strong industrial base and educated population.

Gariepy emphasized the role of robotics in modernizing sectors such as mining, manufacturing, and defense. He highlighted the benefits of using robots in challenging environments like the Arctic and stressed the importance of leveraging robotics to enhance the country’s military capabilities as force multipliers.

While advocating for the integration of robots in military operations for logistics, search and rescue, reconnaissance, and training purposes, Gariepy also underscored the need for stringent controls and certifications to ensure responsible use of robotic systems, especially in armed conflicts.

Addressing concerns about the accountability and morality of autonomous weapons, Gariepy emphasized the necessity of human oversight in decision-making processes involving lethal force. He stressed the importance of upholding a chain of accountability, certification, and thorough testing of robotic technologies to prevent potential risks and ethical dilemmas.

Gariepy also expressed his reservations about certain technologies used in autonomous weapons systems and emphasized the urgency of embracing robotics to enhance safety, productivity, and comfort in society. He highlighted the untapped potential for Canada to bolster its national security through rapid advancements in robotics.

In conclusion, Gariepy’s insights shed light on the transformative power of robotics in various sectors and underscore the importance of responsible deployment and regulation to harness the full benefits of this cutting-edge technology.
