OK Go’s Innovative Robotic Videoclip: A Blend of Technology and Creativity

OK Go is an American alternative rock and pop band known not only for their melodious and well-written songs but also for their inventive and challenging music videos. Many of their videos are known for being some of the most creative and difficult to film. Their videos are often shot in a single take, sometimes with multiple setups like in the “Needing/Getting” video.

While all of their videos are worth your attention and time, a few standout ones are “A Million Ways” and “Here It Goes Again.” These classics are fan favorites. However, their latest video accompanying the song “Love” from the album “And the Adjacent Possible,” released in 2025, after over a decade since their last album, is also a remarkable piece of art.

The video was shot in a vast Budapest train station in a single continuous shot and featured over 30 precisely synchronized robotic arms choreographed to the music. Directed by Damian Kulash, Aaron Duffy, and Miguel Espada, the video employed mirror reflections to create a visually striking effect of infinity. The use of robotic arms from Universal Robots was essential to achieve the intricate movements required while maintaining safety among crew and delicate set pieces.

Before the final shoot, extensive workshops were conducted to fine-tune the movements, combining robots and mirrors. The robotic arms were manually programmed by the team through an intuitive teaching model, fostering collaboration between technicians, directors, and the band. Synchronization was a significant challenge, as over 30 robots had to move precisely to the song’s 78 BPM tempo. A specific control system was developed using Python and C++ to coordinate the movements seamlessly, akin to a musical choreography.

After two days of intense filming with continuous adjustments, the final shot was achieved on take 39. This achievement not only highlights OK Go’s blend of technology and creativity but also portrays how technology can enhance artistic expression rather than replace it.

In conclusion, OK Go’s “Love” video showcases the band’s innovative approach to music videos and their ability to push creative boundaries with the help of advanced technology. The seamless blend of artistry and technical precision in their work continues to captivate audiences and demonstrate the power of imagination in the digital age.
