SoftBank’s Acquisition of ABB’s Robotics Business

SoftBank Group has announced its plan to acquire ABB’s robotics business for $5.375 billion, emphasizing that this strategic move will complement its current investments in artificial intelligence and robotics. The acquisition is anticipated to be finalized in mid- to late-2026, pending customary closure procedures, as indicated by a press release on Wednesday, October 8.

SoftBank’s interest in expanding its presence in AI encompasses several key areas, including AI chips, AI robots, AI data centers, and energy. Following the acquisition, ABB’s robotics business will benefit from synergies with SoftBank’s existing investments in the AI field, which include prominent companies such as SoftBank Robotics Group, Berkshire Grey, AutoStore Holdings, Agile Robots, and Skild AI.

Describing the collaboration as a venture into “physical AI,” SoftBank Group Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son expressed optimism about the transformative potential of merging cutting-edge technology and talent to propel advancements in artificial superintelligence and robotics that will drive progress for humanity.

On the other hand, ABB had earlier announced plans to spin off its robotics business as a standalone entity due to limited synergies with its main businesses focused on electrification and automation. However, following a thorough evaluation of SoftBank’s offer, ABB concluded that the proposal not only aligns with the long-term potential of the robotics business but also provides immediate value to ABB shareholders.

CEO Morten Wierod of ABB conveyed confidence in SoftBank as the new custodian of the robotics business, emphasizing a shared vision for navigating the emerging era of AI-driven robotics. This acquisition comes amidst ABB’s strategic shift towards more profitable ventures, such as its electrification business that is benefitting from the growing demand for AI-driven data centers.

In addition to this acquisition, SoftBank has been making significant investments in advanced technology, including a recent $2 billion investment in chipmaker Intel. The company’s commitment to AI innovation is underscored by substantial investments in OpenAI and partnerships aimed at building robust AI infrastructure.

The acquisition of ABB’s robotics business by SoftBank represents a pivotal moment in advancing the convergence of artificial intelligence and robotics technology, with both companies poised to shape the future of this dynamic industry landscape.
