The Arvind Kejriwal Government in New Delhi has initiated a unique plan to utilize robots for firefighting in the city. Two robots have been introduced into Delhi’s firefighting fleet by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government. These robots are equipped to extinguish fires in various challenging locations such as narrow streets, warehouses, basements, stairs, forests, oil and chemical tankers, and factories. This decision follows a recent tragic fire incident in a factory in Mundka, claiming the lives of 27 individuals.
The introduction of remote-controlled firefighting robots is expected to enhance the accessibility of firefighters to difficult areas, enabling them to navigate narrow lanes and reach spaces unsafe for humans. Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain highlighted the significance of these robots in controlling fires remotely. The robots have the capability of releasing high water pressure at a rate of 2,400 liters per minute, reducing the risks faced by firefighters significantly.
The specially trained firefighters of Delhi Fire Service have been prepared to operate these robots, with a specific Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in place to manage fire incidents effectively. These robots, purchased from an Austrian company, were instrumental in controlling a fire incident at the PVC market of Tikri Kalan a few months prior.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal emphasized that the deployment of these remote-controlled firefighting machines will minimize collateral damage and save lives. The robots, boasting a 140-horsepower engine, multiple water nozzles, and a speed of four kilometers per hour, are designed to swiftly tackle fires and access areas beyond human reach. Equipped with sensors, cameras, and a tracking system, these robots can efficiently extinguish fires in various scenarios, enhancing firefighting capabilities and safety measures.
